YOU ASKED A GREAT QUESTION: I have a big open space above my couch. I want to put something there but I don’t know what. I don’t expect you to know exactly what should go there - but do you have a suggestion as to the type of thing that should go there? (Any other suggestions would be appreciated as well!)
ANSWER: Two things you can do, and two elements that are less present in your livingroom… adding a bit of fire and really enhancing the element of wood. You have a ton of water in the space and the element closes to water in the element cycle is wood. Water “gives birth to” wood in traditional chinese medicine. So, how to accomplish this easily?1. add a bunch of inexpensive chevron or ikat printed pillows with earth tones that synch well with your sofa. this will bring a bit of subtle fire and help take your mind off the white-on-white sofa sitaution, as the eye is drawn to the patterns. THis will not look busy if the colors are muted and they are uniform. Mix them in with what you have, and the sofa will get a “facelift” in the process. 2. add a big, rectangular wood framed piece of art ( or even framed fabric in a cool print that is organic and expresses growth, like really graphic vines or leaves or a great expanse of trees….OR art that is ripe with tones of green and a feeling of wood. OR something of that nature. If you want to do four images, hang them in a rectangular grid. Both will solve your wood deficiency, add a touch of fire for balance and will take your creativity up a notch.
